Dressed to Kill: "Oxford, Not Brogues"

Creo que son muy pocos los que saben que uno de mis sueños más grandes es ser un agente secreto y recorrer el mundo resolviendo misterios y encarcelando villanos que atentan contra el mundo entero.
Desde niño siempre fui un gran fanático de las películas de 007 siendo Dr. No (1962) una de mis favoritas por siempre. A medida que iba creciendo iba actualizando mi biblioteca de películas de espías, entre mis favoritas están: Thunderball (1965), The Ipcress File (1965), Notorious (1946), The 39 Steps (1935), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), Die Another Day (2002) y obviamente From Russia With Love (1963).
Por eso cuando hace tres años Matthew Vaughn anunció que dirigiría una peli de espías protagonizada por mi actor favorito Colin Firth mi corazón casi se me sale del pecho. Ahora, cuando supe que Arianne Phillips sería la diseñadora de vestuario mis gónadas terminaron en mi esófago.
Not many people know that one of my biggest dreams is to actually be a secret agent spy, travel worldwide trying to solve secret almost-impossible missions where I have to jump from skyscrapers to catch a villain and get him or her in jail.
Ever since I was a kid I was always a huge fan of 007 movies, obviously, Dr. No (1962) is my favorite of them. While growing up I updated my movie library to ensure my passion for these movies was just not a fad, some of my favorites are: Thunderball (1965), The Ipcress File (1965), Notorious (1946), The 39 Steps (1935), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), Die Another Day (2002) and obvs From Russia With Love (1963).
So when Matthew Vaughn announced three years ago that he was about to direct a spy movie starring my favorite actor of all times Mr. Darcy himself Colin Firth my heart almost skipped a beat. Now, when I read that Arianne Phillips was going to be the Costume Designer my balls went up to my throat.
Conocida por su trabajo impecable en algunas de mis pelis favoritas (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, A Single Man y en el debut como directora de Madonna, W.E.) y por vestir a Madonna en la mayoría de sus tours mundiales y en sus videos musicales, Arianne se ha convertido en una de las personas que más admiro de toda la industria y en una de las razones por las que me sentí tan atraído a la franquicia de Kingsman.
El atractivo visual de la franquicia es increíble, y su enfoque tan intenso en el estilo y moda masculina hace que nosotros los amantes de la moda nos sintamos embelesados a la hora de entrar al cine. Para esta secuela (Kingsman: The Golden Circle), al igual que en la primera, Arianne dedicó nueve meses en Londres investigando textiles y los talleres más importantes de Savile Row para vestir a los agentes británicos, ahora, hay una nueva agencia hermana estadounidense que entra en la palestra con agentes actuados por Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges, Halle Berry y Pedro Pascal que también es notoria por su impecable estilo utilizando denim con detalles como shearling y tonos más tabaco y whiskey.
Known for her impeccable taste, Arianne has designed wardrobes for some of my favorite movies of all time (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Tom Ford’s A Single Man and Nocturnal Creatures and Madonna’s directorial debut W.E.), she’s also been Madonna’s stylist for decades creating some of her most iconic looks onstage and in music videos. Arianne is by far one of the persons I most admire in the industry.
Kingsman’s visual appeal is undeniable and its focus on men’s style and fashion is another reason why I love the franchise so much - and I’m sure other fashion lovers also do. For this sequel called Kingsman: The Golden Circle, just for the first one, Arianne moved to London for nine months to research fabrics and Savile Row workshops to dress the British agents of Kingsman. Now, there’s also an interesting twist where an American agency enters in the story, which casts other agents played by Channing Tatum, Pedro Pascal, Jeff Bridges and even Halle Berry, their style is more on the denim palette – some shearling and ski suits included – and the color scheme leans more on the tobacco and whiskey sphere.
Dada mi obsesión con espías y mi amor por Kingsman decidí acercarme a Hackett London, una de las marcas más emblemáticas del buen vestir británico, para ver si me podía convertir de una vez por todas en un verdadero Kingsman.
Siguiendo los pasos de iconos del estilo masculino como Cary Grant, David Niven, Sean Connery y Michael Caine, me fui por un clásico traje británico “Chelsea”, double-breasted de cien por ciento lana con forro cien por ciento de seda. La solapa tiene detalles de ‘pespuntes’ hechos a mano y el estampado Príncipe de Gales es uno de los que más me gusta. Uno de los detalles que más me gusta del traje es el “bolsillo monedero” que por si no lo sabían tiene bastante historia y por lo mismo añade más magia al look. Como quería ponerle más de mi onda también traté, en vez de una corbata, un pañuelo de lino rojo vino en estampado de bacteria que me hizo sentir mucho más “yo”.
Como en la película la contraparte de Kingsman toma lugar en una compañía destiladora de whiskey llamada Statesman quise irme a uno de mis bares favoritos de Casco Viejo llamado MULA en el que los tragos de whiskey son lo máximo, cuando estén por el área lléguense y prueben también los platos de Tio Navaja.
Given my obsession with spies and my love for the Kingsman franchise, I decided to approach Hackett London, one of the most emblematic British brands when it comes to dapper all-time-classic British style, to see if I could turn into a Kingsman.
Following the footsteps of some of the greatest style icons like Cary Grant, David Niven, Sean Connery and Michael Caine, I went for a classic double-breasted gray British “Chelsea” tux made of 100% wool and lining in 100% silk. The lapels are backstitched by hand and the Prince of Wales plaid really makes it stand out. One of the details that I like the most is the “ticket pocket” detail, which adds some history into the tuxedo. Since I wanted to put some of my spice into it I tried also a vin-rouge paisley pocket square instead of the traditional tie and I personally love it even more.
In the movie, the American counterpart of Kingsman is Statesman, a whiskey distiller company so I went to one of my favorite bars in Casco called MULA, a place where cocktails take another meaning, if you’re around the area go ahead and visit it – also try the food at Tio Navaja, the veggie options are off the charts.
