Red Carpet: A Scarlet Letter

Rojo es uno de mis colores favoritos al vestirme. Es un color con mucho carácter y da muchísima presencia en un evento ya sea formal o casual pero es también un color un poco complicado para usar en una alfombra igualmente roja.

Estoy seguro que muchos hemos escuchado que es un delito hacerlo pero si es posible vestir rojo para estas ocasiones, siempre y cuando seamos muy cuidadosos con el tono del rojo y obvio, con los accesorios.

He aquí entonces dos casos: ambos CALVIN KLEIN 205W39NYC, ambos en tonos de rojos pero con estilos completamente diferentes.

Hablemos entonces de Carey Mulligan. Ella es sinceramente una de las que más me emociona ver en una alfombra (¿recuerdan ese vestido Vionnet y el Prada que usó en el 2009 para promocionar An Education?), pero si hay algo que me molesta es cuando se utiliza un vestido en un color plano y se combina con zapatos en el mismo color.

Ahora, si el vestido tiene algún detalle – en este caso el doblez rosado en el pecho – no hay ningún problema si los zapatos son de este color, no tiene ni siquiera que ser el mismo tono pero la misma gama, como es el caso de los Gianvito Rossi que están en la foto, y si estas dudando, el negro siempre es una buena opción.

Red is by far one of my favorite colors to wear anytime, anywhere. It adds so much character to your presence but it can also be a situation when it comes to stepping onto a red carpet.

I’m sure you’ve all heard this being a faux-pas but it is possible to wear red on a red carpet on the condition you do it carefully and don’t match the same shade of red, also you have to pay immense attention to accessories (shoes) because they will be your BFFs.

So here we have two cases, both wearing CALVIN KLEIN 205W39NYC, both in scarlet tones, but at the same time in completely different styles.

Let’s talk about Carey Mulligan. She’s sincerely someone I’m constantly excited to see on the red carpets because she takes risks yet does it with so much elegance and nonchalance (can we time travel to 2009 when she wore Vionnet and Prada to promote An Education?), but for me this time she missed the mark. If there’s a fashion conundrum that has affected everyone is that 90s myth that states that you have to match your dress with your shoes. While there are exceptions, this wasn’t the case. I do get what she wanted to do but instead, I would have taken in consideration the pink on her breast flap and would have worn pumps in the same tonal game (e.g. the Gianvito Rossi feathered ones), and if you’re doubting you can always rely on black and neutral shades.

Ahora, hablemos de Dakota Johnson. Si bien es cierto, adoro una mujer en tuxedo, más si es rojo. Pero hay algo que me molesta en esta ocasión y es el largo del mismo, puede que sea también el ángulo de la foto, y entiendo el propósito de alargar su torso pero simplemente cuando la altura no es uno de tus atributos es mejor un top más crop para que tus piernas se vean kilométricas. Todo se resume en las proporciones.

Moving to Dakota Johnson. I do love a woman in a tuxedo, even more when it’s red, but there’s something that bugs me in this look and it’s the length of the tuxedo part, it may be the angle where the photo was taken but, what’s up with those shorty legs? I do get the point of making her torso a little bit longer but it does nothing for her silhouette, sometimes when height is not one of your characteristics all you have to do is go for cropped or tops that do not surpass the middle of your thighs so you can showcase the beautiful legs you have. It’s all about proportions.
