The Museum of Contemporary Arts Embarks on One of its Most Exciting Journeys

It’s a commonality to consider art as an intangible subject. It can come off as elitist and aristocratic when in truth, art is one of the purest and most inclusive forms of expression. In a country as Panama, where the misdistribution of wealth and social segregation is a reality it can become extremely difficult to democratize the arts, specially when we’re talking about locations outside the city.
In an effort to let contemporary art impact as many lives possible, this morning the Museum of Contemporary Arts presented one of three initiatives that are part of the plan to break physical barriers within the museum.
Es muy común pensar del arte como un sujeto lejano e intangible. Puede sentirse elitista y aristocrático cuando en realidad, el arte es una de las formas más puras e inclusivas de la expresión humana. En un país como Panamá, donde la distribución de las riquezas y la segregación social son una realidad de cada día puede tornarse extremadamente difícil la tarea de democratizar las artes, y más aún cuando nos referimos al interior del país.
En un esfuerzo por permitir al arte contemporáneo impactar la mayoría de vidas posibles, esta mañana el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo presentó tres iniciativas que son parte de un plan que busca resquebrajar las barreras físicas entre el museo y el público.

“El Contenedor Mac” is a project that revolves around a moving exhibition. These two containers (20 feet each) have been altered to foster pieces from the museum’s collection, under the museum’s standards. One of the containers will serve as exhibition space of close to seven art pieces, while the other will focus on education, where kids and grown-ups will be able to have access to workshops, courses and cultural activities linked to the given exhibition.
In its first phase, “El Contenedor MAC”, will visit for different destinations in the countryside of Panama: David, Chiriqui (Feb 18th); Santiago, Veraguas (April 1st); the Azuero Peninsula (April 15th), and West town of Chorrera (May 13th), one of the most populated in Panama. It wil be open to public Tuesday to Sunday from 9AM to 7PM, not counting screenings and other nocturnal activities.
Exhilarating as it seems, “El Contenedor MAC” will be one of the most culturally exciting exchanges the country has ever experienced.
“El Contenedor MAC” es un proyecto que toma como sujeto una exhibición en movimiento. Estos dos contenedores (de 20 pies cada uno) han sido alterados para albergar algunas de las 689 piezas que componen la colección del MAC, obvio bajo los mismos estándares del museo. El segundo contenedor va a centrarse en la parte educativa, en él desde niños hasta adultos van a tener acceso a talleres, cursos y otras actividades culturales que enfaticen la exhibición en cuestión.
En su primera fase, “El Contenedor MAC” visitará cuatro destinos del interior del país: David, Chiriquí (18 de febrero); Santiago, Veraguas (1 de abril); la Península de Azuero (15 de abril), y Panamá Oeste, Chorrera (3 de mayo). La exhibición estará abierta al público en un horario de martes a domingo de 9AM a 7PM, adicionando proyecciones de películas y demás actividades nocturnas.
Está será, de seguro, una de los intercambios culturales más emocionantes e interesantes en la historia del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo.
